Snow falls early, piles up deep and lingers long atop the Grand Mesa at more than 10,000 feet above sea level. Three networks of cross-country ski trails crown this enormous, flat-topped mountain. Skyway and Country Line trails are interconnected. Ward Creek, on the south side of the Mesa, is the most extensive system. Volunteers print a Nordic map and maintain the tails, which offer free access although donations are welcome. The West Bench Trail and Old Mesa Road are marked but ungroomed winter routes.
